The first paper money was invented by the Chinese around A.D 650, a manuscript tells of a paper note issued in china around those time. The oldest existing collectible paper note dates from 1368 and is from the MING DYNASTY. This note is huge measuring approximately 9”x 13”. Its paper was made from the inner bark of the MULBERRY TREE. The first true European bank note was issued in 1661 by a private bank in Sweden, while the paper money in the New World was issued in 1690 in Massachusetts Bay Colony (one of the earliest New England settlements in present-day Massachusetts).

COINS
The oldest coins available today was discovered in Ephesus, an ancient Hellenic city and prosperous trading centre on the coast of Asia minor. Made from electrum, a natural occurring alloy of gold and silver, the coins originated in the area of Lydia and more than 2,700 years old making it one of the very earliest coins. It had a design on one side only, a result of the primitive method of manufacture. Coins are pieces of hard material used primarily as a medium of exchange or legal tender. They are standardized in weight, and produced in large quantities at a mint in order to facilitate trade. They are most often issued by a government.

Coins are usually metal or alloy, or sometimes made of synthetic materials. They are usually disc shaped. Coins made of valuable metal are stored in large quantities as bullion coins. Other coins are used as money in everyday transactions, circulating alongside banknote, these coins are usually worth less than banknotes, usually the highest value coin in circulation is worth less than the lowest-value note. In the last hundred years, the face value of circulation coins has occasionally been lower than the value of the metal they contain, for example due to inflation.
